The challenge
Acrylic.LA aimed to redefine music licensing by connecting brands with niche music that resonates with their target audiences. The challenge was to design a platform that leverages fanbase data and AI to facilitate the discovery and licensing of music, ensuring a seamless experience for both artists and brands.
Research & insights
User Interviews: Conducted interviews with artists and brand representatives to understand their needs and expectations for a music licensing platform.
Competitive Analysis: Analysed existing music licensing platforms to identify best practices and areas for differentiation.
Key Findings:
Artists sought opportunities to monetise their music through licensing.
Brands required a streamlined process to discover and license music that aligns with their marketing strategies.
Both parties valued data-driven matching to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
Design process
Ideation & Sketching: Utilised Miro for brainstorming sessions to conceptualise the platform's layout and key features.
Wireframes & Prototyping: Created wireframes in Figma, focusing on intuitive navigation and clear calls-to-action. Developed interactive prototypes using Framer to simulate user interactions.
User Testing & Iteration: Conducted usability tests to gather feedback on the design and functionality. Documented insights in Notion and iterated on the design to enhance user experience and address any pain points.
The solution
The final design delivered a user-friendly platform that allowed:
Artists to Register and Submit Music: Providing them with opportunities to earn sync revenue.
Brands to Discover and License Music: Utilising AI-driven matching to find music that resonates with their target audiences.
Data-Driven Insights: Leveraging fanbase data to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of music selections.
The outcome
TechStars: Acrylic.LA successfully joined TechStars, having only a design prototype to show.
Enhanced Marketing Performance: Brands reported improved engagement and resonance with their target audiences due to the tailored music selections.
New Revenue Streams for Artists: Artists benefited from additional income through sync licensing, complementing their existing revenue sources.
Learnings & Reflections
This project underscored the importance of data-driven design in creating platforms that serve multiple stakeholders. By focusing on the needs of both artists and brands, we developed a solution that not only facilitates music licensing but also enhances marketing outcomes and artist revenues. Future iterations could explore additional features such as personalised recommendations and enhanced analytics to further support users.
